Brooklyn – Screening and Q&A
Friday 15 July, 2016 | 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm
BROOKLYN tells the poignant story of a young Irish woman torn between two loves, two countries and two ways of life. Set in the 1950s, and adapted for the screen from Colm Tóibín’s award-winning novel of the same name, the film centres on Eilis Lacey, played by the wonderful Saoirse Ronan, who leaves Ireland and her beloved mother and sister behind for the streets of Brooklyn, New York. Adjusting to her new surroundings, Eilis begins to thrive in them and, when she meets and falls in love with a young Italian-American (Emory Cohen), things couldn’t be looking brighter. However, she is called back suddenly to Ireland and finds that she must decide where her future lies: in the exciting, bustling metropolis of New York, or the comforting, familiar fields of home, where she must also contend with her feelings for another suitor in the form of light-hearted Jim Farrell (Domhnall Gleeson). Acclaimed as “moving, emotionally intelligent and refreshingly old-fashioned” by film critic Mark Kermode, this is a cinematic experience not to be missed.
Castlewellan’s very own Eileen O’Higgins stars in the film as Eilis’ friend Nancy, in her feature film debut, and we are delighted to announce that Eileen will be at the screening and will indulge the audience in a Q&A session afterwards.
