Québécoise singer-songwriter Martha Wainwright is set to play her only Irish date at this year’s Soma Festival in Castlewellan, County Down.
Martha is a member of one of the world’s best known musical families, daughter of folk legends Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III and sister of Rufus.
Martha tours her music around the world to sold out audiences on several continents. With an undeniable voice and an arsenal of powerful songs, Martha Wainwright is a beguiling performer and a refreshingly different force in music. Martha released her critically and commercially successful debut LP, ‘Martha Wainwright’ in 2005, with London’s Sunday Times including the song, ‘Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole’ in their songs of the year and Rolling Stone called it “a blistering prelude to her debut album.”
In 2008, Martha followed with her sophomore album, ‘I Know You’re Married But I’ve Got Feelings Too’ and in 2010 toured the world promoting her third album, ‘San Fusils, Ni Souliers A Paris: Martha Wainwright’s Piaf Album’. Her last album, ‘Come Home To Mama’, produced by Cibo Matto’s Yuka Honda, was heralded by Mojo Magazine as a “substantial and brilliantly sung career best.”
Martha returns to the stage with her latest album “Goodnight City”, her best record yet with songs written by her friends and other great songwriters such as Beth Orton, Glen Hansard, her brother Rufus Wainwright, Michael Ondaatje, and Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs.
Making the announcement, Festival Director Tíona McSherry said, “We are delighted to be able to welcome such a well-respected artist to the festival programme. Martha has a large and loyal fanbase here and it’s great that she can be with us for her only gig on the island this Summer.”
Martha Wainwright has also spent time on the silver screen playing characters in Martin Scorsese’s Aviator and more recently in the HBO special Olive Kitteridge alongside Frances McDormand.
Wainwright will perform on Friday 14th July at the Soma Festival Marquee in Castlewellan. Tickets are available online through somafestival.com or in-store from JR’s of Castlewellan and Keown’s Jewellery in Newcastle.
